BRONX, NEW YORK (December 18, 2024) – A 3-year-old girl was critically injured in a Williamsburg, Bronx hit-and-run collision on Holland Avenue near Burke Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the incident took place around 1:00 p.m. on Friday. The young girl was with her mother when she was struck by a person riding a scooter.
The driver of the scooter fled the scene of the collision. Paramedics were called in order to help her.
She was taken to Jacobi Hospital with a skull fracture.
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in hit-and-run collisions. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “There were an estimated 737,100 hit-and-run crashes in 2015 (NHTSA, 2016). This translates to a hit-and-run crash happening somewhere in the U.S. every 43 seconds. The 2,049 fatalities that resulted from hit-and-run crashes in 2016 were the highest number ever recorded (NHTSA, 2017).” A number of different factors could contribute to a hit-and-run collision.
All scooter operators have a legal obligation to operate their vehicle at a reasonably safe speed. They are also not permitted to ride on the sidewalk. If a scooter rider fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several steps should be taken after any hit-and-run collision.
Scooter accidents can often leave victims with very serious injuries. This is particularly true when someone sustains a head injury. Traumatic head injuries often require that victims get extensive medical treatments. Victims are also at a greater risk of developing many different neurodegenerative injuries. Any person injured in a scooter accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the girl injured in this crash and her family. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place. The driver responsible for this crash should step forward and turn themselves in. It is never too late to do the right thing.
