FREEPORT, LONG ISLAND (March 20, 2026) – At least four people were injured in a residential fire in Freeport, Long Island, after they became trapped inside of their apartment.
Long Island officials are saying that the fire started in the basement of the building before spreading to all three floors. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene to help all of the victims.
Four people were extricated from the apartment. One person was apparently in cardiac arrest and rushed to the Nassau University Medical Center.
Multiple other people were taken to local area hospitals to receive treatment for burn injuries. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
Residential fires remain a leading cause of preventable injury and death across New York City. According to the New York Fire Commissioner, “There were 23,901 structural fires in Fiscal 2023, a two percent increase compared to 23,387 in Fiscal 2022.There were 12,594 non-structural fires in Fiscal 2023, a seven percent decrease compared to Fiscal 2022. Total fire company runs between Fiscal 2022 and Fiscal 2023 increased 3 percent.” There could be multiple causes of any apartment fires.
Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition. This necessitates that they abide by all fire and building codes. When an apartment owner has actual or constructive notice that their building is in a dangerous condition, they must take action. If an apartment has blocked exits that prevent people from escaping a fire, this could serve as evidence of negligence.
