FAIR LAWN, NEW JERSEY (February 19, 2025) – A 71-year-old crossing guard was seriously injured in a Fair Lawn car accident outside of Forest Elementary School.
Bergen County officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:40 AM on Wednesday. The crossing guard was hit by a vehicle as he was attempting to help children get through the intersection.
A Toyota Camry was making a left turn when it struck the victim. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the man. He was taken to Saint Joseph University Medical Center with major injuries.
A full investigation into the Fair Lawn collision remains ongoing at this time.
Crossing guards play an essential role in keeping children safe. But they have increasingly become involved in collisions. According to the MEL Safety Institute, “Over the last decade, the accident rate for crossing guards has increased by 65%. Thirty years ago, half of our children walked to school. Today, only 15% walk. As a result, our school zones are clogged with more traffic than they were designed to handle, which is alarming considering that pedestrian deaths increased by 12% from 2020 to 2021 and 17% of all traffic fatalities in the United States involved pedestrians.” There are a number of common causes of car accidents.
Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Pursuant to New Jersey Vehicle Code 39:4-115, drivers must yield the right of way to vehicles or pedestrians close enough so as to pose suppose a hazard before making a left turn at an intersection. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any pedestrian accident.
It can be hard to know where to begin after being seriously injured in a car accident. Victims are often left with high medical bills and may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. Sadly, the drivers responsible for these collisions often do everything in their power to avoid accountability. Any person injured in a Fair Lawn car accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a bodily injury claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the crossing guard injured in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be some accountability for the sake of the victim.
