BRONX, NEW YORK (April 26, 2026) – Two people have tragically died and 11 people were injured in a Bronx apartment fire by the intersection of E. 187th St. and Belmont Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 1:30 PM on Tuesday. Firefighters received reports of a heavy fire on the first floor of the building.
Photos of the scene showed smoke billowing into the air. There is a barbershop and deli on the ground floor of the building.
It remains unclear exactly where the fires may have started. Sadly, two people died due to their injuries.
Eleven people were transported to local hospitals to receive treatment.
Residential fires remain a leading cause of preventable injury and death across New York City and the United States. According to The Zebra, “In a five-year period, house fires caused 2,620 deaths and $6.9 billion in property damage (NFPA). In 2018, the national average was 2.5 civilian fire deaths and 9.8 injuries per 1,000 fires (NFDR).” There are many ways that an apartment owner may have acted negligently prior to an apartment fire. There are many common causes of apartment fires.
Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. If a property owner in New York has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their property, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. Any person injured in a New York City apartment fire may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
