OSHA Investigation Underway After Worker Died From Falling Into Trash Compactor in Garden City
GARDEN CITY, NEW YORK (December 8, 2025) – A worker has tragically died in an industrial accident at a Garden City, Long Island business along South Street.
Long Island officials are saying that the accident took place around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday. A worker fell into some type of trash compactor.
Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victim. He was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Far too many workers are killed or seriously injured on the job each year. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Private industry employers reported 2.6 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2023, down 8.4 percent from 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This decrease was driven by a 56.6-percent drop in illnesses to 200,100 cases in 2023, the lowest number since 2019.” There are many steps that businesses should take to help prevent workplace accidents.
All employers in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their work sites in a reasonably safe condition. Pursuant to New York Labor Law § 200, “All places to which this chapter applies shall be so constructed, equipped, arranged, operated and conducted as to provide reasonable and adequate protection to the lives, health and safety of all persons employed therein or lawfully frequenting such places.” All machinery and equipment must be operated and guarded so as to protect workers. It is important that certain steps are taken after any workplace accident in New York.
The vast majority of workplace accidents are preventable. They are often the result of clear safety lapses. This could involve situations where machines lack adequate guardrails or other protective measures. In certain cases, liability for a workplace accident could extend to several different entities. For example, the company that manufactured a piece of equipment could be liable for an accident. Companies can be liable for accidents caused by design defects with their products.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the worker who died in this Long Island industrial accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to OSHA. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong so that other tragedies can be prevented.
