BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (January 1, 2024) – A worker has tragically died after being stabbed in the lobby of Days Inn near Wyndham Brooklyn on East New York Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the attack took place around 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. A 35-year-old worker was stabbed in the neck and abdomen.
The suspect fled on foot and was wearing all black with a ski mask and baseball cap. Authorities are saying that the shelter has been operating at the Days Inn hotel since the pandemic began.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was transported to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where he later died.
The NYPD is currently searching for the suspect. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Hotels have one of the highest rates of violence out of all different types of businesses. According to one study by the doi Foundation, “Hotels and lodging had the highest number of mean crimes per business (2.72), with 272 violent crimes occurring at 100 parcels. Service stations/Convenience stores and Restaurants/Bars/Clubs had the second and third highest mean number of violent crimes per business with 1.97 and 1.27, respectively.” Hotels should take a number of measures in order to prevent assaults.
Depending on the facts of any case, a hotel could be liable for any attack. All property owners have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This must be done for all people whose presence on a property is reasonably foreseeable. Property owners must also take measures to protect guests from criminal activity. The level of security that a hotel or other businesses may need will depend on the level of crime around the property. It is important that certain steps are taken after any attack at a hotel.
Attacks at hotels and other businesses are often highly preventable. It is important that the owners of these properties always take security into consideration. But far too often this does not take place. In many cases, there will be a history of attacks at a certain location. The family of any person who is killed in a hotel may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man killed at this Brooklyn homeless shelter. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD. This was a senseless attack that should not have taken place.
