MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (December 8, 2025) – A woman has died after being hit by an MTA subway train at the Manhattan intersection of West 44th Street and Eighth Street.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 7:01 AM on Tuesday. A woman was hit by a C line subway train for undetermined reasons.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple subway lines were temporarily suspended as an investigation into the accident took place.

Liability for Manhattan MTA Subway Accidents

Many people are seriously injured or killed in accidents involving trains every year. According to the National Safety Council, “Railroad deaths totaled 954 in 2024, a 1% decrease from the 2023 revised total of 967. Nonfatal injuries totaled 6,542, a 3% decrease from the 2023 revised total of 6,768. From 2023 to 2024, fatalities at highway-rail crossings increased 7%, while fatalities involving other types of incidents decreased 4%.” Several factors could contribute to any subway accidents.

  • Defects with platforms near the tracks could cause passengers to fall into the path of trains.
  • Subway operators may be traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions.
  • Subway operators may fail to slow down to avoid hitting people and obstacles on the tracks.

Train conductors have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians. This necessitates that they maintain a safe speed at all times. They must also brake to avoid clear hazards ahead of them. If a conductor fails to take reasonable measures to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this may be construed as negligence. The family of any person who died in an MTA accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
