Driver Backed Into Elderly Pedestrian Near Queens Supermarket
QUEENS, NEW YORK (June 4, 2025) – An elderly woman was seriously injured in a Queens car accident near a supermarket along 73rd Avenue and 215th Street.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 12:40 PM on Sunday. A 78-year-old driver was backing his vehicle up when he hit the 72-year-old victim.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. She was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle was also hospitalized, though it is unclear how they may have been injured.
A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
Many pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in collisions. According to the NHTSA, “76% of pedestrians were killed in collisions that occurred when it was dark, with another 4% occurring during dusk or dawn (Schneider, 2020). Retting (2021) notes that during the years 2010-2019 —a time when pedestrian fatalities have been increasing—the number of pedestrian fatalities that occurred in the dark increased by 58%, while daylight fatalities increased by 16%.” Drivers should take several measures to avoid hitting pedestrians.
Drivers must use caution in order to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. There’s simply no reason that a driver should ever back into a pedestrian. These types of collisions are easily preventable.
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to be the result of drivers who are simply not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. It has been estimated that over 93% of collisions involve some amount of human error. Any person that is injured in a pedestrian accident may be able to seek damages through a civil claim. Damages can help cover many of the financial losses and medical expenses associated with a serious collision.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to the woman injured in this Queens pedestrian accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
