Liability For Brooklyn Hit-And-Run Collisions

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured in car accidents every year. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit-and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” Several factors could influence the likelihood of hit-and-run collisions.

  • Many hit-and-run collisions involve drivers who are speeding.
  • A large portion of hit-and-run collisions involve an intoxicated driver.
  • Hit-and-run collisions are more likely at intersections that are dimly lit.

It is illegal for any driver to flee the scene of any injury collision. Drivers that flee the scene of hit-and-run crashes can face criminal and civil liability for their actions. It is important for accident victims to understand that they do have rights. The family of any person that died in a hit-and-run collision may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
