Liability for Long Island Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death. This is particularly true with respect to hit-and-run collisions. According to the AAA Foundation, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit-and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” Several factors could contribute to any hit-and-run crash.

  • Driver intoxication
  • Speeding
  • Poor road conditions
  • Inclement weather

Drivers owe a duty of care to all other people that they share the road with. They must observe all traffic regulations. A number of collisions are caused by unsafe turns at intersections. According to New York Vehicle Code 1141, any driver intending to turn left must first yield the right of way to any vehicle that is close enough to pose a hazard. Victims of car accidents often suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

The injuries associated with any collision may not be immediately obvious. This is particularly true when a person sustained internal injuries such as organ damage. It can be difficult to know where to begin after being injured in a car accident. But it is important for victims to understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek legal recourse through a bodily injury claim.
