New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. A vehicle was traveling northbound when it hit the two cyclists from behind.

Thousands of bicyclists are critically injured or killed in bicycle collisions every year. According to the NHTSA, “The number of bicyclists killed in traffic crashes has been steadily trending upwards since 2010. From 2010 to 2021, bicyclist fatalities ranged from 623 to a high of 966 with a yearly average of 800 (NCSA, 2022; Stewart, 2023).” There are a number of common causes of bicycle collisions.
Drivers have a legal obligation to take steps in order to avoid causing collisions. One of the most common causes of collisions remains speeding. According to New York Vehicle Code 1180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” It is important that victims of bicycle accidents take a number of steps in order to protect their rights.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any bicycle accident. Victims are often left with catastrophic injuries, high medical costs, and an uncertain future. These collisions can make it hard for people to be gainfully employed. Any person injured in a bicycle accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
