Three Killed in Inwood Apartment Fire

Man Charged After Turning Himself In for Allegedly Igniting Inwood Apartment Fire That Left Three People Dead

INWOOD, MANHATTAN (May 14, 2026) – Three people have tragically died in an Inwood apartment fire that was allegedly sparked by a man that flicked a cigarette.

New York City officials are saying that the incident took place after midnight on May 4. Surveillance footage has allegedly captured a man flick a cigarette into cardboard boxes.

The fire from those cardboard boxes spread to the stairway and upper floors of the building. Firefighters were called to the scene to help victims and put out the fire.

Multiple people were extricated from the building. Sadly, three people died due to the severity of their injuries.

Authorities are saying that one person has turned himself in. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Inwood Apartment Fires

Residential fires remain a leading cause of preventable injury and death across New York and the United States. According to one study in Science Direct, “Though structural fires accounted for roughly a third of all fires, they generated more than 80% of the fire losses in terms of civilian fire deaths (3070 out of 3670) and civilian fire injuries (11,790 out of 13,350), while also generating the majority of direct property damage ($14.7 billion out of $23 billion).” There are many different causes of apartment fires.

  • Electrical malfunctions
  • Lit candles
  • Gas explosions
  • Lithium-ion battery malfunctions
  • Unattended cooking

Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This necessitates that they abide by all fire and building codes. When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of the dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. If a property owner fails to take action to address a hazardous condition, this could serve as evidence of negligence. The family of any person who died in a residential fire may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
