RYE BROOK, NEW YORK (December 21, 2024) – At least five people were injured in a Rye Brook wrong-way collision along the Hutchinson River Parkway near Lincoln Avenue.

Westchester County officials are saying that the collision took place early Monday morning. A 75-year-old driver was allegedly traveling the wrong direction down the road when he crashed into a car carrying a family of five.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Westchester County Car Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the IIHS, “A total of 42,514 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2022. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s most recent estimate of the annual economic cost of crashes is $340 billion.” Many different factors could contribute to a collision.

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Poor road conditions

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise a great deal of care in order to avoid collisions. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1128, a vehicle shall be driven within a single lane and only moved unless such action can be made safely. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that crosses into opposing lanes of traffic and hits another vehicle. It is important that certain steps are taken after any car accident.

  • The accident should be reported to the police.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Victims should seek medical aid.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

Car accidents are often highly preventable. This is particularly true with respect to head-on collisions. These accidents often involve drivers who are distracted and not paying attention to traffic signs. In many instances, a poorly designed roadway may fail to properly warn drivers that they will be heading in the wrong direction. Any person injured in a car accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
