THE BRONX, NEW YORK (December 17, 2024) – A woman has tragically died in a collision with a semi-truck in University Heights, Bronx.
New York City officials are saying that the collision took place on Thursday. A woman was traveling down the road when she hit the side of a tractor trailer.
The force of the impact caused the vehicle to become wedged underneath the truck. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.
Despite lifesaving measures, she later died due to her injuries. A full investigation into this University Heights collision remains ongoing at this time.
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in truck accidents in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 5,837 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 1.8% increase from 2021 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 3% from 2021, and up 24% in the last 10 years.” Truck drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.
Truck drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. This requires that drivers slow down in certain areas. Depending on the prevailing conditions, they may need to slow down well below the speed limit. If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Certain steps should be taken after a truck accident.
Truck accidents are often highly complex. The factors that contribute to a semi-truck accident could take place hours, weeks, or even months beforehand. For example, trucks must be properly maintained at all times. Failing to properly maintain a truck can lead to catastrophic failures.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman killed in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what took place.
