Pedestrian Killed In East Harlem Car Accident by East 105th Street

Out-of-Control Vehicle Involved In Fatal East Harlem, Manhattan Pedestrian Accident By East 105th Street and First Avenue

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (September 2, 2024) – A pedestrian has died and a second was critically injured in an East Harlem, Manhattan car accident, by East 105th Street and First Avenue.

New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place around 4:00 p.m. on Monday. An out-of-control vehicle rear-ended a vehicle, which was then pushed into a truck.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital.

One was pronounced dead, and the other is expected to survive. A full investigation into the East Harlem collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Manhattan Car Accidents

Far too many pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in pedestrian collisions across NYC. According to Streets Blog NYC, “The city is in the midst of a pedestrian death and injury spike, with 55 pedestrians killed between Jan. 1 and June 17, the second highest number through this point of the year since 2016, per the Department of Transportation’s numbers.” There are a number of measures that city officials can take to help reduce pedestrian collisions.

  • Police officers can heavily enforce traffic violations likely to lead to pedestrian collisions.
  • Traffic engineers should study which intersections have the highest accident rates.
  • City officials can install traffic-calming measures in areas known to have speeding.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid pedestrian collisions. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any pedestrian collisions.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • The police report for the collision should be reviewed.

Pedestrian collisions are often highly preventable. They often involve situations where drivers are not properly paying attention to the road ahead of them. Sadly, though, drivers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if they injure someone. Any person injured in a pedestrian collision may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
