HUNTINGTON, NEW YORK (June 27, 2025) – An off-duty Suffolk County police officer was charged after allegedly being involved in a DUI car accident with a pedestrian.
Suffolk County officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:30 AM on Sunday. A pedestrian was trying to cross the road when they were struck by a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. The pedestrian sustained major injuries and was transported to the hospital.
The driver involved in the crash was arrested on suspicion of DUI. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in collisions every year. According to the National Safety Council, “in 2023, most pedestrian traffic deaths occurred in urban settings (83%), on the open road (76%) versus intersections (24%), and during dark conditions with or without artificial lighting (74%). The largest number of pedestrian deaths occurs on Fridays (1,155), closely followed by Saturdays (1,150).” Many different factors may contribute to pedestrian accidents.
All drivers have a legal obligation to use caution to avoid hitting any pedestrian in the roadway. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid a pedestrian, this could be construed as negligence. Several steps should be taken after any pedestrian accident.
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. This is particularly true when drivers are intoxicated. What many drivers do not realize is that there are a number of substances that could potentially impair them besides alcohol. This includes prescription medications. Any pedestrian injured due to the negligence of another driver may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to the pedestrian injured in this Suffolk County DUI accident. It is deeply concerning that the defendant is a law enforcement official. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to authorities.
