BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (June 4, 2025) – An MTA bus ran over an elderly pedestrian as he was crossing a Brooklyn street near the intersection of East 12th Street and Sheepshead Bay.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:40 PM on Monday. A B36 bus was making a left-hand turn when it collided with the pedestrian.
The victim became pinned underneath the bus and seriously injured in the process. Surveillance footage captured the collision.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
A full investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
Many pedestrians are seriously injured in collisions every year with MTA buses. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” Bus drivers should take several actions in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian.
Bus drivers are considered common carriers. They must obtain a commercial license and do everything in their power to avoid causing harm to their passengers and pedestrians. They must be particularly cautious when a pedestrians crossing the road. If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any bus accident.
Bus accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve bus drivers who are less experienced or who are traveling in less than ideal circumstances. Pedestrian collisions are much more likely to take place at intersections and at night. Drivers are supposed to be particularly cautious in these settings. But far too often this does not take place.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to the pedestrian injured in this collision. This is part of a larger trend of MTA drivers failing to use caution to avoid hitting pedestrians. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD.
