LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK (March 8, 2025) – One worker was killed, and another was injured after a wall collapsed in Manorhaven along Kirkwood Road.
Long Island officials are saying that the incident took place around 11:43 AM on Monday. Two workers were at the demolition site when the wall collapsed on top of them.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims. A 20-year-old man went into cardiac arrest after the accident and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
A 56-year-old man was also transported to the hospital with more moderate injuries. An investigation by OSHA remains ongoing.
Demolition sites remain particularly dangerous for workers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “In construction of buildings, the number of fatal falls, slips, and trips decreased from 89 in 2018 to 83 in 2020 and then increased to 91 in 2021. The number of fatal falls, slips, and trips in heavy and civil engineering construction increased from 16 in 2018 to 20 in 2020 and then decreased to 10 in 2021.” Construction companies should take a number of actions in order to prevent accidents.
Construction companies have a legal obligation to protect workers from foreseeable sources of harm. If a worksite is in a dangerous condition, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Companies should follow all health and safety guidelines by OSHA. There are a number of factors that could contribute to a wall collapse.
Construction site accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to be the result of companies that fail to follow safety standards. In particular, accidents are more likely to occur when construction projects are rushed. Any person injured in a construction accident may be able to seek recourse through a civil claim. It is always a good idea to consult with an experienced construction accident attorney if you’ve been injured at a construction site.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the worker that died in this Manorhaven wall collapse. It is our sincere hope that the other worker will be able to make a full recovery. Any person that may have more information should reach out to OSHA.
