Wheelchair-Bound Woman Run Over and Pinned by School Bus in Kensington, Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (March 8, 2025) – A woman in a wheelchair was injured after being run over by a school bus in Kensington, Brooklyn by Parkville Avenue and Seton Place.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:20 AM on Thursday. The woman was crossing the street in a wheelchair when she was run over by the school bus.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. She was transported to Maimonides Medical Center in order to receive treatment.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
Pedestrians in wheelchairs are uniquely vulnerable in car accidents. According to BMJ Open, “Risk of pedestrian crash death was significantly higher for men using wheelchairs (3.95/100 000 py; 95% CI 2.96 to 4.93) than women (0.73 per 100 000 py; 95% CI 0.40 to 1.06). The risk for male wheelchair users was higher than in the overall male population (p<0.001), but women’s risk did not significantly vary from the overall female population (p=0.28).” Bus drivers should take a number of steps in order to avoid collisions.
School buses are considered common carriers. Their drivers are held to a very high standard in terms of safety. They must be particularly cautious to avoid hitting pedestrians in the roadway. If a school bus driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of school bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
It is important that accident victims receive a thorough medical evaluation after any incident. Many of the injuries associated with a bus collision are not immediately obvious. After an accident victim has been medically evaluated, it is also a good idea that they consult an experienced bus accident attorney. Any person injured in a bus accident may be able to seek compensation through a bodily injury claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the victim of this Kensington school accident. It is our sincere hope that she is able to make a full recovery. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD.
