Nine Carnival Miracle Guests Injured After Being Hit By Shuttle Bus Outside of Cruise Terminal
HONOLULU, HAWAII (April 16, 2024) – At least 9 people were injured, and one woman died after being hit by a shuttle bus outside of the terminal for Carnival Miracle.
Honolulu officials are saying that the accident took place on Friday. The shuttle bus crashed into a group of pedestrians and two concrete barriers near the terminal.
Initial reports suggest that the driver of the shuttle bus mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brakes when the collision took place.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. A total of 10 people were taken to the hospital. Sadly, one woman involved in the collision died due to her injuries.
A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Far too many people are seriously injured every year in bus accidents. According to Journalist’s Resource, “on average, about 63,000 buses [of all kinds] are involved in an accident each year; about 14,000 result in an injured person, and 325 result in a fatal injury. About 50 passengers (including the driver) are killed, on average, in a given year.” There are a number of common causes of bus accidents.
Bus companies are considered “common carriers,” and their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. If a bus driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps be taken after any bus accident.
If a bus driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could be held at fault. Generally speaking, employers are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. Any person who is injured in a bus accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this shuttle bus accident. It is our sincere hope that the other victims will be able to make a full recovery. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police.
