NYC Logs First Bicyclist Death of 2020

A 41-year-old bicyclist riding through Brooklyn was tragically struck and killed by a box truck. He became the first bicyclist death of 2020. The fatal crash happened shortly after 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2020, when 41-year-old Pedro Lopez was hit by a commercial truck while riding south on Vandervoort Avenue in East Williamsburg. The 2005 Isuzu truck’s driver smashed into him as he was turning into a garage near Rewe Street. Lopez was rushed to Woodhull Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

The police didn’t charge the truck driver, who remained on the scene, despite a video showing him recklessly striking the bicyclist. The video, which was handed to the police by a witness, was obtained by Streetblog and Transportation Alternatives.

They released a statement asking the NYPD and the Mayor to stop ticketing bicyclists and to take immediate action towards street safety in an attempt to avoid the disasters of the 2019 carnage. 27 people died in bicycle accidents last year. In response, NYPD ticketed more than 35,000 bicyclists. This strategy obviously did not work to reduce bicyclist fatalities.
