Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in bus accidents every year in New York City. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” There are several factors that may contribute to any bus accident.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. This is particularly true for bus drivers. Bus drivers are considered common carriers and must operate their vehicles with a great deal of care for the safety of their passengers. If any driver fails to exercise due care and collides with another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
Bus accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers fail to scan the road ahead of them for hazards. Sadly, it is often innocent bystanders that are most impacted by these collisions. Accident victims should understand that they are protected by a number of laws. Any person injured in a bus accident in New York City may be able to seek some measure of justice through a bodily injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to all of the people injured in this South Ozone Park bus accident. It is our sincere hope that all of them will be able to make a full recovery. This was a preventable collision that should not have taken place.
