NEWARK, NEW JERSEY (September 7, 2025) – At least 10 people were injured when a New Jersey Transit bus crashed into a PSEG utility truck by 15th Ave. and Bedford Street in Newark.
Newark police officials are saying the accident took place around 10:46 AM on Thursday. The transit bus appears to have struck the side of the utility truck and knocked it over in the process.
Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victims. Twelve passengers were taken to University Hospital in order to receive treatment.
A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Buses are considered common carriers, and their drivers must operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. According to Squaw Valley Ski Corp. v. Superior Court, “This elevated standard of care for common carriers has its origin in English common law. It is based on a recognition that the privilege of serving the public as a common carrier necessarily entails great responsibility, requiring common carriers to exercise a high duty of care towards their customers.” Bus companies should take several measures to avoid collisions.
Bus drivers must exercise due care to avoid collisions. Many collisions involve a speeding driver. Bus drivers must maintain their vehicles at a safe speed at all times. This may necessitate that they slow down well below the stated speed limit in certain situations. If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any bus accident.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires that buses capable of carrying 16 or more passengers have at least $5 million in liability coverage. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a bus driver may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. If you’ve been injured in a bus accident, one of the best things that you can do is contact a bus accident attorney.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to all of the people injured in this Newark bus accident. It is our sincere hope that all of the victims will be able to make a full recovery. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
