New York City Police Investigating Multi-Vehicle Collision On Gowanus Expressway

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (May 30, 2024) – Multiple people were injured in a Brooklyn six-vehicle car accident on the Gowanus Expressway.

New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place around 3:50 p.m. on May 15. A driver lost control of their vehicle and collided with a Ford van.

This led to a chain reaction crash that also involved an Acura sedan, a Mercedes SUV, and a Nissan SUV. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victims.

Liability For Brooklyn Car Accidents

Car accidents are a major cause of preventable injury and death. According to the NHTSA, “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released its first projections for traffic fatalities in 2023, estimating that 9,330 people died in traffic crashes in the first three months of the year. This represents a decrease of about 3.3% as compared to 9,645 estimated fatalities during the same time in 2022.” It is essential that drivers take certain steps in order to avoid collisions.

  • Drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.
  • Drivers should slow down during periods of heavy traffic.
  • Drivers should always use their turn signals to let other drivers know their intentions.

Many collisions are due to drivers who follow other vehicles too closely. According to New York VAT § 1129(a), drivers must maintain a safe following distance with the vehicle ahead of them. When a driver rear-ends a vehicle in their own lane, they will usually be considered at fault. It is important that certain steps be taken after any collision.

  • The cause of the collision should be determined.
  • Medical records related to the crash should be preserved.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

Car accidents can be extremely challenging for all involved. Victims may suffer life-altering injuries that impair their ability to work and their overall quality of life. Any person who is injured in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
