Harley Davidson Motorcyclist Killed in LaFayette Collision Involving Two Tractor-Trailer Trucks on Interstate 81
LAYFAETTE, NEW YORK (July 30, 2025) – A motorcyclist has tragically died in a Lafayette truck accident on the northbound lanes of Interstate 81.
New York State police are saying that the accident took place around 7:38 AM on July 26. A truck driver was heading down the road when his vehicle experienced a tire blowout.
Another truck attempted to overtake the truck with a tire blowout. At some point, a Harley Davidson motorcyclist lost control of his vehicle and collided with a guardrail.
Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, he was later pronounced dead.
Motorcyclists are uniquely vulnerable in car accidents. According to the IIHS, “Motorcycles are less stable and harder for other drivers to see than cars, and they often have high performance capabilities. When motorcycles crash, their riders lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle, so they’re more likely to be injured or killed. The federal government estimates that per mile traveled in 2022, the number of deaths on motorcycles was nearly 22 times the number in cars.” Truck drivers should take certain measures to avoid collisions with motorcyclists.
Truck drivers must obtain a commercial license and exercise a great deal of care to avoid colliding with another vehicle. If a truck driver makes a dangerous light change, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. This is true even if a truck does not touch another vehicle that proceeds to crash. It is essential that the circumstances surrounding a truck accident are properly understood.
Truck accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to be the result of truck drivers that were traveling too fast for the conditions. In many cases, these accidents are due to trucks that are not properly maintained. A vehicle system failure like a tire blowout could easily cause a truck driver to lose control and collide with another vehicle. The family of any person killed in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the motorcyclist killed in this LaFayette truck accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
