EAST VILLAGE, NEW YORK (August 28, 2025) – A male pedestrian has tragically died after being hit by an MTA bus in East Village, Manhattan, near Avenue D and East 10th Street.
New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday. A 45-year-old pedestrian was trying to cross the road when he tripped into an intersection.
An MTA bus was turning south onto Avenue D when it hit the pedestrian. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.

Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in the United States. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, “3,434 pedestrians were killed on U.S. roadways in the first half of 2022, based on preliminary data reported by State Highway Safety Offices. A second report analyzing state-reported data for all of 2022 found that roadways continue to be incredibly deadly for pedestrians.” Buses present a number of hazards to pedestrians.
Buses are considered common carriers, and their drivers are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They must exercise a great deal of care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Many pedestrian collisions involve drivers who are speeding. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall drive a motor vehicle at a speed greater than would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. It is crucial that certain steps are taken after any bus accent.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for any bus accident. A government entity like a city or state could be liable if a pedestrian death was caused by a dangerous condition on public property. This could include defects that cause pedestrians to fall on the roadway. The family of any person that is killed in a bus accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man that died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. It is our sincere hope that city officials will consider measures to make this intersection safer.
