SANFORD, NEW YORK (November 20, 204) – A man has died and a boy was seriously injured after a dump truck plowed into a Sanford Home by Old Plan Road.
Sanford police officials are saying that the incident took place on Friday afternoon. A dump truck driver crashed into the home and seriously injured a young boy inside.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims. The boy was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, and the driver of the dump truck died.
Photos of the accident site showed the dump truck halfway through the home. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Dump trucks can be particularly dangerous for pedestrians and other people on the roadway. According to the Engineering News Record, “Serious accidents involving dump trucks and ready-mix concrete delivery trucks continue to edge up, part of a persistent, multi-industry problem with poor driving habits that has not yet responded to increased fleet and vehicle insurance premiums.” Dump truck companies should take several measures in order to avoid collisions.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. Dump truck drivers will typically need to acquire a commercial driver’s license and are held to a particularly high standard. If a dump truck driver failed to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of dump truck collisions tend to suffer very serious injuries.
The vast majority of dump collisions are preventable and involve one or more safety violations. This could include instances where drivers are fatigued or intoxicated. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control estimated that staying awake for only 18 hours can reduce a person’s ability to drive safely equal driving with a BAC of 0.05%. Any person injured in a dump truck collision may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the family of the boy injured in this Sanford dump truck accident. It is our sincere hope that he is able to make a full recovery. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police.
