Investigation Underway After Woman Died in Harlem Apartment Fire by West 140th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard

HARLEM, MANHATTAN (March 24, 2026) – A 62-year-old woman has tragically died in a Harlem apartment fire at a six-story building on West 140th St.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 4:30 PM on Sunday. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the apartment to help all of the victims.

Smoke could be seen billowing out of the windows. Rescue workers were able to locate one woman. The fire was extinguished roughly 1 hour after it started.

Sadly, the injured woman was later pronounced dead due to injuries. A full investigation remains ongoing.

Liability for Harlem Apartment Fires

Residential fires remain a major cause of preventable injury and death across New York. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “In 2023, local fire departments responded to an estimated 1.39 million fires in the United States. These fires caused an estimated 3,670 civilian fire deaths and 13,350 reported civilian fire injuries. The property damage caused by these fires was estimated at $23 billion.” Several steps should be taken after any apartment fire.

  • All medical records should be collected and preserved.
  • The source of the fire should be determined.
  • The history of inspections at the apartment unit should be understood.
  • The family of any person who died should contact an experienced premises liability attorney.

Property owners in New York City have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. If they failed to take action to correct a dangerous condition, this could form the basis of a premises liability claim. The family of any person who died in a residential fire may be able to pursue damages in a civil claim.
