New York City police are saying that the collision took place on Sunday morning. An SUV collided with two people who were on some type of scooter.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for New York City Scooter Accidents

Scooters have become incredibly popular across the United States. This has led to a sharp rise in the number of scooter collisions. According to UCSF, “E-bicycle injuries doubled every year from 2017 to 2022, while e-scooter injuries rose by 45 percent each year. Injured e-riders tended to be slightly older and wore helmets less often than conventional riders.” Several factors could contribute to scooter accidents.

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Poor road conditions

All drivers must use caution in order to avoid colliding with other vehicles. According to New York Vehicle Code 1141, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley, private road, or driveway shall yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.” It is important that certain steps are taken after any collision.

  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • The police report should be reviewed.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know what to do after any scooter collision. This is particularly true when someone is seriously injured. Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for any collision. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have rights. The family of any person killed in a collision may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
