THE BRONX, NEW YORK (February 28, 2025) – A bicyclist has tragically died in a Bronx MTA bus accident near East 149th Street and Brook Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 10:45 PM on Tuesday. A bus was making a left turn when it collided with a cyclist in an intersection.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Tragically, the 57-year-old bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
No passengers were on the bus at the time of the fatal collision. The bus driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Bus accidents remain all too common across New York City. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” Bus drivers should take a number of actions in order to avoid colliding with cyclists.
Bus drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid colliding with any pedestrian or cyclist in the roadway. When a bus driver is preparing to make a left turn, they must yield the right-of-way to any vehicle or cyclist that is traveling from the opposite direction and close enough so as to pose a hazard. If a bus driver makes a dangerous left turn in front of a bicyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
If a bus driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could also be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. The family of any person killed in a bus accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the bicyclist killed in this Bronx MTA bus accident. This was a preventable tragedy that should not have taken place. Any person that may have more information about the collision should reach out to the NYPD.
