STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (April 23, 2024) – A 34-year-old man has tragically died in a Staten Island truck accident at an Amazon fulfillment center in Bloomfield.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 11 PM on Wednesday. The 34-year-old worker was at the loading dock at the facility.
A 40-year-old man was operating a box truck and put his vehicle into reverse. A reversing vehicle struck the victim, who was standing behind the truck.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was transported to Richmond University Medical Center in critical condition.
Sadly, he died at the hospital. A full investigation remains ongoing.
Thousands of people are seriously injured or killed every year in truck accidents. According to the IIHS, “The number of people who died in large truck crashes was 51% higher in 2022 than in 2009, when it was the lowest it has been since the collection of fatal crash data began in 1975. The number of truck occupants who died was 83% higher than in 2009.” There are a number of different factors that may contribute to a truck accident.
All truck drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. They must operate with an abundance of caution to avoid hitting any pedestrian in the roadway. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
When a worker is injured at their job, they or their family may be entitled to worker’s compensation. The family of a deceased worker may also be entitled to damages to a third-party liability claim. A third-party liability claim may be possible if an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributes to an accident. An example of a third party may be a company that owned or operated a truck separate from the company that employed the injured worker.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this accident at the Staten Island Amazon facility. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to OSHA. This was a preventable tragedy that should not have taken place.
