UPPER EAST SIDE, MANHATTAN (February 10, 2025) – A woman has tragically died in an Upper East Side, Manhattan Tesla car accident not far from 72nd Street.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place just before 3 AM on Tuesday. A woman was driving a Tesla when she hit a guardrail.
The force of the impact caused the Tesla to flip over and catch fire. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.
Despite life-saving measures, she was later pronounced dead. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.
Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the IIHS, “A total of 42,514 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2022. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s most recent estimate of the annual economic cost of crashes is $340 billion. Contributing to the death toll are alcohol, speeding, lack of seat belt use and other problematic behaviors.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.
Depending on the facts of any case, liability for a car accident could extend beyond a driver. For example, a car manufacturer like Tesla could potentially be liable for a collision. There have been a number of car accidents involving Tesla vehicles catching fire. Generally speaking, car companies can be held strictly liable for accidents that contribute to injuries or deaths. It is important that certain steps are taken after any collision involving a vehicle that catches fire.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any car accident. This is particularly true in single-vehicle collisions. The police are quick to blame the drivers of these collisions in official reports. But in far too many instances, single-vehicle accidents involve cars with one or more defects. It is important for accident victims and their families to understand that they do have rights. The family of any person who died in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the woman killed in this Upper East Side Tesla accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong. The number of accidents involving Teslas that have caught fire remains deeply concerning.
