JAMAICA, NEW YORK (December 26, 2024) – A 45-year-old woman has tragically died in a Jamaica, Queens hit-and-run car accident by 158th Street and 111th Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:35 p.m. on Christmas. A woman was walking to the store when she was hit by two vehicles.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Despite those efforts, she later died due to her injuries.
Police are still searching for one of the drivers involved in the collision.
Speeding remains one of the leading causes of car accidents. According to the National Safety Council, “Speeding was a factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities in 2022, killing 12,151, or an average of over 33 people on a typical day. The total number of fatal motor-vehicle crashes attributable to speeding was 10,922.” Drivers should take a number of actions in order to avoid collisions.
All drivers must operate with due care in order to avoid collisions. They must be particularly cautious around pedestrians. When a driver is involved in a collision, they must remain at the scene. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several steps should be taken after any hit-and-run collision.
It can be hard to know where to begin after a hit-and-run collision. Many victims sustain life-altering injuries that may prevent them from working. Many families must cope with the loss of a parent. When a driver is negligent and causes a fatal crash, they can be held accountable through a wrongful death claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman killed in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. The driver involved in this crash should come forward and do the right thing.
