Woman Critically Injured In Midtown, Manhattan Box Truck Accident

Elderly Woman Seriously Injured After Being Hit by Box Truck in Midtown, Manhattan Crosswalk

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (December 21, 2024) – An 83-year-old woman was seriously injured in a Midtown, Manhattan box truck accident by East 45th Street and Second Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:22 p.m. on Wednesday. The woman was crossing the street when she was hit by a white box truck making a left turn.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim, who was left unconscious on the ground. She ended up with a severe injury to her leg.

Paramedics took her to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Manhattan Box Truck Accidents

Pedestrians lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are more likely to be seriously injured in the event of a crash. According to the IIHS, “Deaths from motor vehicle crashes with pedestrians have increased 83% since reaching their low point in 2009 and account for 18% of crash fatalities. The rates of pedestrian crash deaths per 100,000 people are highest for people ages 20 and over.” Trucks present a number of unique hazards for pedestrians.

  • Trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of pedestrians.
  • Trucks weigh substantially more than passenger vehicles, thereby making even low-impact collisions possibly fatal.
  • Trucks have a high center of gravity, which can lead to pedestrians being pulled underneath.

Truck drivers have a legal obligation to slow down in order to avoid hitting pedestrians in the roadway. They must be particularly cautious around elderly people and young children. If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of truck accidents often suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Amputations
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve drivers who are not paying attention to the road ahead of them. In other situations, drivers may have simply failed to check their blind spots. Any person injured in a New York City truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a bodily injury claim.
