BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (April 28, 2025) – A woman and an eight-year-old child were injured in a Flatbush, Brooklyn school bus accident along Bedford Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:30 AM on Wednesday. A 43-year-old woman was with an 8-year-old boy when they were struck by a school bus that drove onto the sidewalk.
Authorities suspect that the school bus driver may have intended to hit the brakes before hitting the gas. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims.
Both were taken to Maimonides Medical Center in order to receive treatment. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing.
Many pedestrians are injured in car accidents every year across New York. According to the New York Department of Health, “Injuries to pedestrians are among the top 10 leading causes of injury-related hospital admissions and death for almost all age groups In New York State. Approximately 300 pedestrians are killed and 15,000 are injured by motor vehicles each year on the state’s roadways, and more than 3,000 pedestrians are admitted to the hospital annually.” Buses can be particularly dangerous for several reasons.
Bus companies are considered common carriers in New York. Their operators must exercise a great deal of care in order to avoid injuring their passengers and pedestrians in the roadway. If a school bus driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
Even after a person’s physical injuries have healed, many accident victims suffer from long-term psychological injuries. This can manifest in a wide variety of different ways, including nightmares and PTSD. Sadly, bus companies often do everything in their power to deny liability if one of their drivers is involved in a collision. This is why it is so important for accident victims to seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to the victims of this Flatbush school bus accident. It is our sincere hope that they are able to make a full recovery. This was a preventable collision that should not have taken place. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD.
