U.S. Senate Voted On Thursday To Pass The Camp Lejeune Justice Act After Marine Corps Base Residents Were Exposed To Contaminated Water

CAMP LEJEUNE, NORTH CAROLINA (June 18, 2022) – The U.S. senate voted to pass the Camp Lejeune Justice Act which will allow former residents of the Marine Corps base to seek reparations for exposure to contaminated water.

The bill received bipartisan support from democrats and republicans. President Biden is expected to sign the bill into law later this week under the Honoring Our PACT Act.

The bill allows those who lived at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina to file claims for exposure to toxic water. For over three decades, the Marine Corps based contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are known to be carcinogenic.

Over 70 chemicals have been discovered in the water including trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), vinyl chloride (VC), and benzene. Those eligible to seek aid include children, primary caretakers, military spouses and all of the people directly exposed.

In the past, thousands of people have been prohibited from pursuing claims because of a North Carolina law that imposes a 10-year statute of limitations for these sorts of claims. North Carolina is the only state with such a law.

Though that law was later amended for future cases, it does not apply retroactively. This is why the Camp Lejeune Justice Act was necessary.
