Investigation Underway After Unauthorized Police Pursuit on Henry Hudson Parkway Resulted in Fatal Collision
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (April 5, 2025) – Two NYPD officers have been suspended after allegedly leaving the scene of a pursuit that took place along Henry Hudson Parkway.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place early Wednesday. Two NYPD officers were pursuing the driver of an allegedly stolen vehicle.
That vehicle crashed into a lamp post and burst into flames. The officers involved allegedly returned to their command but failed to report the crash.
Firefighters and paramedics then received a report about a vehicle on fire. An unidentified deceased male was pulled from the vehicle.
Apparently, the pursuit may have been unauthorized in the first place. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Far too many people are killed or seriously injured every year in accidents during vehicle pursuits. According to the Washington State Standard, “An investigation this year by the San Francisco Chronicle, which compiled data from the federal government, private research organizations and news reports, found that at least 3,336 people across the country were killed in pursuits from 2017 through 2022.” There are a limited number of situations where high-speed vehicle pursuits are appropriate.
All police officers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid collisions. Police officers are typically able to perform a number of actions that would otherwise be illegal during a pursuit. This may include speeding or running red lights. However, officers must follow department protocol. When police officers in New York show a reckless disregard for the safety of the public, this could form the basis of a negligence claim if an accident took place following a pursuit. It is important that certain steps are taken after any police accident.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any accident involving a police pursuit. This is especially true when a family has lost someone. To make matters worse, police officers will often do everything in their power to deny liability when they’re involved in a fatal collision. This is why it is so important that any fatality involving law enforcement is properly investigated by an outside party.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this accident. It is deeply concerning that NYPD officers allegedly failed to call for help and left the scene. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
