Construction Accident

Preventing Construction Site Accidents Through Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Approximately 20% of work-related accident deaths involve construction workers. However, these workers only represent 4% of the employed workforce in the United States. Individuals who work at construction sites are at the greatest risk for getting injured or even dying while on the job. Unfortunately, the majority of these accidents are preventable.

Using BIM to Prevent Construction Accidents

As technology develops, the construction industry has started to rely more heavily on Building Information Modeling (BIM) to develop its projects. BIM is used to digitally monitor the design of construction projects, the plan, and the construction. BIM can also be used as safety management of construction sites.

The Center for Construction Research and Training recently published a short study as to how “near miss accidents” can be visualized in BIM. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines a near miss as an accident where no property is damaged and no personal injury is suffered, but where, given a slight shift in time or position, damage and/or injury could have occurred. Project owners or contractors do not have to report near-miss accidents. Nevertheless, near miss accidents are reliable safety indicators while analyzing construction site safety.

The study shows that a simple BMI application can be used to report and record near miss accidents in order to visualize them. These visualizations can be helpful for safety managers and other construction professionals to realize the danger of near misses and take the necessary measures to prevent these potential deadly accidents.
