New York City Investigating Queens Hit-And-Run Truck Accident Near Kissena Boulevard and Horace Harding Expressway
QUEENS, NEW YORK (September 12, 2024) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a Queens hit-and-run truck accident by Kissena Boulevard and Horace Harding Expressway.
New York City police are saying that the collision took place around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday. A Honda was involved in a collision with a U-haul truck.
The collision caused one of the vehicles to strike a pedestrian crossing the road. Two women allegedly fled the scene of the collision.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian died due to their injuries.
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in the United States. A large portion of these deaths involve hit-and-run drivers. According to the IIHS, “Twenty-five percent of pedestrian deaths in 2022 occurred in hit-and-run crashes. Between 2013 and 2019, hit-and-run crashes accounted for about 20% of pedestrian fatalities. This number jumped to 24% in 2020, and it has inched up to 25% since then.” There are a number of common causes of hit-and-run collisions.
All drivers have a legal obligation to take steps to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any hit-and-run collision.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any pedestrian collision. This is especially true when someone dies. Family members are often left without answers. To make matters worse, the drivers who are responsible may try to evade justice by fleeing. It is important for victims to understand that they do have rights. Surviving family members are able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the person who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be some accountability for the sake of the victim’s family.
