New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 10 PM on Thursday. A pedestrian was crossing the road when they were hit by a vehicle traveling westbound on E. New York Ave.

Thousands of people are harmed or killed each year in hit-and-run collisions. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit-and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” Several factors could contribute to a hit-and-run collision.
All drivers must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. This may necessitate that they slow down well below the speed limit. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are failing to observe traffic laws. This is particularly true when one driver flees the scene of a collision. The family of any person who died in a New York City hit-and-run car accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
