WEST NYACK, NEW YORK (February 27, 2022) – A pedestrian identified as Patrick O’Neill has tragically died in a car accident along Route 303.
Rockland County police officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday. Patrick O’Neill was walking along the roadway when he was hit by a vehicle going north.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. Patrick O’Neill was given life-saving medical treatment and taken in an ambulance to Montefiore Nyack hospital.
Sadly, he died later on Wednesday night. Police interviewed the driver involved in the accident. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in car accidents every year. According to the Centers of Disease Control, “an estimated 137,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for nonfatal crash-related injuries in 2017. Per trip, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to be killed in a car crash.” There are many factors that could potentially contribute to a pedestrian accident.
All drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. They must reduce their speed when pedestrians are close enough so as to pose a hazard. If a driver goes past a yield sign without stopping and hits a pedestrian, this may be considered prima facie evidence of their failure to yield. There are a number of steps that should be taken in order to determine what happened in a pedestrian accident.
The family of any victim that died in a car accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the unexpected expenses that can come with the sudden and tragic loss of a loved one. It is extremely important that evidence is properly preserved after an accident. A wrongful death attorney can investigate your case free of cost and get to the bottom of what caused an accident.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of Patrick O’Neill. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to police. It is our sincere hope that there is accountability and that city officials will take measures to prevent other tragedies at this location.
