Man Charged With Manslaughter After Crash That Left One Person Dead on Route 11 in Chateaugay
CHATEAUGAY, NEW YORK (January 28, 2026) – One person has tragically died in a Chateaugay car accident with an allegedly intoxicated driver on Route 11.
Franklin County officials are saying that the accident took place around noon on Wednesday. A 24-year-old man was heading down the roadway when he lost control of his vehicle and went off the road.
Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victim. Sadly, a female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities performed a field sobriety test and checked the driver’s blood alcohol content. Those authorities claimed that he was above the legal limit. He has since been charged with manslaughter.
A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in accidents with intoxicated drivers. According to the NHTSA, “Every day, about 34 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 42 minutes. In 2023, 12,429 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths.” Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid an accident while intoxicated, they can be held at fault through a civil claim. In particular, the family of any person who died due to the negligence of a drunk driver may be able to pursue damages through a wrongful death claim. It is important that the circumstances surrounding any accident be properly understood and that evidence be preserved.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this crash. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong. It is our sincere hope that steps are taken to prevent similar tragedies.
