Massive 37-Vehicle Pileup Involving Semi-Trucks Left Multiple Injured on Interstate 81 During Winter Weather Conditions

LAFAYETTE, NEW YORK (January 28, 2026) – A number of people were injured in a multi-vehicle car accident on Interstate 81 in LaFayette.

Onondaga County officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:20 p.m. on Thursday. A number of vehicles were traveling on Interstate 81 south when they became involved in a massive 37-vehicle pileup.

A number of commercial trucks and passenger vehicles were involved in the collision. Photos of the accident site showed the interstate completely covered in snow.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. Several people were transported to the hospital to receive treatment.

A number of the victims said that they feared that they would die in the crash. At least four people were transported to Crouse Hospital.

Another three were taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. A full investigation into the multi-vehicle collision remains ongoing.

Liability for LaFayette Car Accidents

Every driver in New York must operate their vehicle with the care necessary to avoid causing accidents. According to New York Vehicle Code 1180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” There are many situations where drivers may need to travel below the speed limit.

  • Drivers will typically need to slow down during heavy traffic.
  • Drivers will need to slow down during periods of inclement weather.
  • Drivers will need to slow down at night and during periods of reduced visibility.
  • Drivers will need to slow down if their vision is obscured by the sun.

Even driving the speed limit could be considered dangerous, depending on the prevailing weather and road conditions. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that collides with another vehicle in front of them. If a truck driver was involved in a crash, their employer could potentially be held at fault. Employers are typically liable for the wrongful conduct of their workers who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties.

Common Injuries Associated With Truck Accidents

Many people are seriously injured or killed every year in accidents involving commercial trucks. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2023, 5,375 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 8.4% decrease from 2022 but a 43% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is down 8% from 2022, but up 22% in the last 10 years.” Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Organ damage

Many of the injuries associated with a car accident will not be immediately obvious. Even if a person is able to heal physically from their injuries, a number of victims suffer long-term psychological trauma. This can manifest through anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Any person injured in a car accident may be able to pursue damages through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
