Box Truck Driver Involved In Deadly Collision With NYPD Officer Arrested
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (September 2, 2025) – An off-duty NYPD officer was tragically killed in a Brooklyn hit-and-run truck accident on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway near Atlantic.
New York City Police Department officials are saying that the collision took place around 8:30 AM. The NYPD officer was traveling westbound on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway when he was hit by the box truck.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the officer later died due to the severe nature of his injuries.
The driver involved in the collision fled the scene. He has since been arrested. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing.
Thousands of pedestrians are killed and seriously injured every year in pedestrian accidents. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit- and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” Several different factors could contribute to a hit-and-run collision.
Every driver in New York has a legal obligation to adequately scan the road ahead of them and to slow down to avoid hazards. Pursuant to NY Veh & Traf L § 1180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.” If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a motorcyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Certain steps should be taken after any truck accident.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be multiple liable parties for any New York truck accident. In particular, if a truck driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could be held at fault. As a general rule, employers are vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties. The family of any person who lost a loved one due to the negligence of a truck driver may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim killed in this collision. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to authorities. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
