WEST HARLEM, NEW YORK (September 2, 2025) – One person has died and two people were injured in a sewage boat explosion along the Hudson River near 138th Street.

New York City officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:30 AM on Saturday. A New York City-owned sewage transport boat exploded for some reason.

The explosion is believed to have started in one of the hulls on the boat. Paramedics were called to the scene of the incident to help the victims.

Sadly, a 59-year-old worker was killed in the explosion, and two other people were injured. A full investigation into the cause of the blast remains ongoing.

Liability for New York City Boat Explosion Accidents

Workers face a variety of different hazards at their jobs across New York City. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Private industry employers reported 2.6 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2023, down 8.4 percent from 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This decrease was driven by a 56.6-percent drop in illnesses to 200,100 cases in 2023, the lowest number since 2019.” Companies should take a number of measures to keep their workers safe.

  • Employer should conduct routine safety audits and risk assessments
  • Employer should ensure that all workers are well trained in safe practices and emergency procedures.
  • Employers should provide clear policies and enforce all written safety rules.

Employers across New York have a legal obligation to provide their workers with a reasonably safe work environment. Pursuant to New York Labor Law 200, “All places to which this chapter applies shall be so constructed, equipped, arranged, operated and conducted as to provide reasonable and adequate protection to the lives, health and safety of all persons employed therein or lawfully frequenting such places.” If safety hazards at a worksite contributed to an accident, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain actions are taken after any workplace accident.

  • There should be a thorough investigation by OSHA.
  • Medical records related to any injuries should be preserved.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

Workplace accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to be the result of avoidable safety lapses. In particular, as employers hurry to finish projects, it is more likely that important safety measures are ignored. The family of any person killed in a workplace accident may be able to pursue damages through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the losses involved in a workplace fatality.
