PORT AUTHORITY, NEW JERSEY (November 20, 2024) – A 22-year-old NJ Transit rider was seriously injured after a tire blowout at the Port Authority gate area.
Port Authority officials are saying that the incident took place around 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. A tire on a Paterson-bound bus blew out for unknown reasons.
A man in line to board the bus was pelted by shattered glass and sustained serious lacerations. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim.
A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.
Tire blowouts cause many serious accidents every year in the United States. According to UTires, “An average 33,000 accidents happen annually because of tires, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. At least 2,000 of those are blowout-related.” There are a number of reasons that tires may inadvertently blowout.
Transportation companies are considered common carriers and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They must periodically inspect and maintain all of their vehicles. This includes bus tires. Faulty tires on a bus could lead to a catastrophic rollover or other accident. If a bus company failed to adequately care for bus tires, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Certain steps should be taken after any bus accident.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for any accident involving a tire blowout. The company that manufactured the tires involved in an accident could also be held at fault. Many tires have manufacturing defects that may increase the odds of a catastrophic failure. Any person injured in a tire blowout may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the person injured in this incident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what happened.
