One Person Killed, 36 Injured in Staten Island Shipyard Explosion Along Richmond Terrace in Staten Island
STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (May 31, 2026) – At least 36 people were injured and one person was killed in a Staten Island shipyard explosion along Richmond Terrace.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place on May 22 in Mariners Harbor. Multiple workers were in a confined space in the dry dock, and they were rocked by the explosion.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victims. One worker was identified as a Chinese immigrant and sadly died in the explosion.
A full investigation of the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Companies in NYC have a legal obligation to protect their workers from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. If a worksite is in a dangerous condition, and this contributed to a worker’s injury, the owner or operator of that site could be liable. Pursuant to New York Labor Law 200, “All machinery, equipment, and devices in such places shall be so placed,
operated, guarded, and lighted as to provide reasonable and adequate protection to all such persons.” There are many factors that could contribute to any shipyard explosion.
It can be difficult to know what to begin after any workplace accident. Many workers are left with catastrophic injuries. This can seriously impact a worker’s ability to work or even perform daily tasks. It is important that victims of Staten Island workplace accidents understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the worker killed in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to OSHA. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
