STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (October 19, 2024) – A 21-year-old motorcyclist has tragically died in an Eltingville, Staten Island car accident by Richmond Avenue and Amboy Road.

New York City officials are saying that the collision took place around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. An SUV was involved in a collision with a motorcycle.

Liability For Staten Island Motorcycle Collisions

Thousands of motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured in collisions every year. According to the National Safety Council, “Although motorcycles make up only 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.7% of all vehicle miles traveled in the United States, motorcyclists accounted for 14.6% of all traffic fatalities and 3.5% of all injuries in 2022. A factor that directly influences motorcycle fatality trends is helmet use.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.

  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Drivers should slow down during periods of reduced visibility.
  • Drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

Drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. They should continuously scan the road ahead of them and slow down when necessary. When a driver fails to take reasonable measures in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a civil claim. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any car accident.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • The history of collisions at the intersection in questions should be understood.
  • The police report for the collision should be reviewed.

Motorcycle accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve drivers who make dangerous turns or violate other traffic regulations. When a driver is negligent and causes a fatal collision, they can be held to account through a civil claim. But this does depend on the unique facts of any crash. No two collisions are ultimately the same.
