But things can go wrong and unfortunately do go wrong too many times. One of the most dangerous, yet preventable, medical errors during surgical procedures is the medical staff leaving a foreign object in the patient. If you or a loved one has been the victim of such a medical mistake, you may be entitled to money damages.
According to a research conducted by the Joint Commission, an agency that accredits hospitals and other health facilities, in the past seven years, there were more than 770 reports of foreign objects left in patients, resulting in 16 deaths and additional care and extended hospital stays. The Joint Commission’s report further notes that objects most commonly left behind after surgical procedures include towels, needles and other small objects such as broken parts of instruments.
Although leaving behind foreign objects after surgery is a common medical mistake, it is easily preventable. In fact, U.S. hospitals and surgery centers have been advised time and time again that such mistakes are preventable and a simple plan could easily prevent the need for unnecessary additional care or death.
If you or a loved one has suffered further injuries or died due to substandard care provided by a physician or medical facility, you may be entitled to compensation.
