MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (May 28, 2024) – A man tragically died in a Greenwich Village, Manhattan garbage truck accident at the intersection of 4th Street and Cornelia Street.
New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place around 5:20 a.m. on Thursday. A private sanitation truck was backing up when the rear wheels of the vehicle ran over the victim.
Paramedics were called to Greenwich Village in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the man died due to his injuries.
A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
According to one report from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there are around 2,500 garbage truck fatalities every year. Garbage trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of pedestrians. There are a number of measures that garbage truck drivers should take in order to avoid hitting pedestrians.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. When a driver intends to back up, they have to make sure that there are no pedestrians behind them. There is simply no excuse for a truck driver backing over a pedestrian. Several different factors could contribute to any pedestrian accident involving a garbage truck.
Depending on the facts of any case, liability for a garbage truck accident could extend beyond any driver. For example, a garbage truck company could be liable for the wrongful actions of their drivers. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this Greenwich Village garbage truck accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place.
